According to a few Ukrainian beliefs, mavkas appeared on the ground at the time "when the ground was covered with spring greenery."

In Ukrainian, the name Mavka is a synonym for the word mermaid. Ukrainians called Thursday on the Rusal (green) week, when mermaids celebrate their Easter, Mavskaya or Nava Easter (Ukrainian Mavsky, Nyavsky great day), which confirms the synonymy of the concepts of "mavka" and "mermaid".
